Moondeer & Friends Gallery,
located in the heart of downtown Boulder Junction, is a combination of
contemporary fine
art and craft, European, Oriental and American
antiques and artifacts, Putumayo World Music CD's, books, cards,
and professional custom framing. The gallery was
founded in July 2001 by the artist Sara Muender to serve as a
retail outlet for her own work along with the work of her many artist
friends. She is accompanied in this venture by her friend and partner,
Jennifer Arnett Musson, a professional custom framer. They are assisted
in the gallery by artist and framer Susan Miller-Crane. Together they
represent at least 150 local and regional artists. The gallery is
currently housed in a beautiful new building constructed in 2008,
designed by Sara to mimic her home studio. The building consists of a
large open gallery area downstairs with framing areas in the back, and
upstairs exhibition and workshop areas. The gallery is full of light
and color. Most of the work relates to the North Woods, and covers all
media including pottery/ceramics, all forms of painting, reproductions,
glass, photography. jewelry, free-form sculpture, fiber arts, batik,
wearable art, etc. It is a wonderful space to showcase not only Sara's
work but the work of many of the North Woods' finest artists and
craftspeople. The gallery is open daily from late May through the
holidays and Saturdays in January & February. We are open by
appointment only in March & April.
Artist's Statement: Sara Muender is a commercial artist specializing in graphic design and photography. She
and her husband Thomas Folsom divide their time between the cranberry bogs of
northern Wisconsin and the eastern Caribbean islands of St. Martin
and Saba. In the late 1980's Sara began developing
her own unique style of painting based on pen and ink sketches using
the contour or blind drawing method and water media. More recent work is
in the form of monotypes, a hand-pulled print-making method using
oil-based inks on paper and a printing press. Subject
matter and style vary from the whimsical animals, cottages and
landscapes of the Caribbean to the more impressionistic flora and fauna
of the North Woods. Most work is available in the form of original
paintings & monotypes, giclee prints, limited-edition prints &
cards. Commissioned works may be accepted at the artist's discretion.
